“As far back as I can remember, I was always drawing. I went to school to get a degree in Illustration, and there learned to paint, putting myself through college with earnings from commissioned artwork. There was a time when I was considered one of the top up-and-coming illustrators on the West Coast. Eventually I had pieces in various galleries and art shows.
Everything changed when I discovered several things at the same time: the Alaskan wilderness, international travel, and unconventional lifestyles. Nowadays I draw on trips, paint when I’m at home, and still do commissions—for individuals instead of commercial entities. (If interested, check out the Contact page.) Most of the images on this page were created from those commission requests.
In my early years as an artist I did a lot of fantasy art, and got some of it published. But eventually I realized that I got the most satisfaction out of rendering reality onto paper or canvas, especially wildlife and landscapes. Of course, an artist makes continual decisions during the creative process, and applies his own way of seeing and his own filters. And so in seeking realism, he nevertheless creates a piece of his own personal vision of the world.”
