“What I love is drawing what I see—the world that is in front of me. I will draw almost anything—dancers, decrepit buildings, interesting faces—but nature and wildlife is what really draws me to draw it. To me, a sketch is a way to connect with a place, an experience, or an element of wild nature.
So I always carry my sketchbook. Those of you who have traveled with me on an expedition trip may have noticed me sneaking off with it during some uncommitted moment, and settling myself, however briefly, in front of a scene that has caught my interest. My time is always limited on such occasions, so sometimes I end up starting a drawing in the field and finishing it back in my quarters.
Over the years, I have amassed a stack of these sketchbooks, a record of my travels and adventures. All of the drawings on this page come from them.”
